Congratulations to the Gemstone team NATURE on winning the Best Presentation Award. The team was supervised by Dr. Liangbing Hu, focusing on the Nanopaper Applications to Universalize Renewable Electronics.

A transparent wood sample from Dr. Hu’s lab was on exhibit at Ohio State (Building Ohio State: From Forest to the Renovation of the Thompson Library). The exhibition sparks many inquiries on the possible use of transparent wood.

A team of materials engineering students including Bing Research Group PhD Candidate, Steven Lacey, improved the ballistic resistance of soft body armor twofold by modifying ballistic grade Kevlar fabric with PBA-functionalized carbon nanotubes. The project entitled "Novel PBA-grafted Carbon Nanotube Soft Body Armor" won First Place in the 2014 ASM Undergraduate National Design Competition.

Nicholas Weadock, a junior materials science and engineering major, received the Dinah Berman Memorial Award, which recognizes academic excellence combined with leadership or service to the Clark School. Weadock is an honors student who played a key leadership role in designing and operating the university’s winning 2011 Solar Decathlon entry, WaterShed. He designed the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system and ran the house during the intensive 10 days of competition on the National Mall.
